Catch A Dragon By The Tail
I’m falling down, down, and into the olivine depths of a mangrove bayou.
Sounds become muffled beneath the surface and I gaze upwards to silken sunlight dancing across the surface.
A large, golden bellied gator snakes through the water, some 15ft long, and I reach out.
Grasping at his tail, I have him. Fingers interlock saurian scales and I’m taken by a force.
I’m racing up, upwards. The giant reptile breaks the surface and colossal wings burst forth and beat down.
He and I, still interlocked, still moving upwards. We become airborne.
I haul my way up the spinal ridges of the now dragon, peering a hundred meters down to see the swamp give way to carmine canyons.
For miles of twists and turns we glide. Through rippled sandstone cleaved by raging rapids.
The terrain once again morphs. With a graceful thud, my dragon lands on a towering tepui, at the entrance to an old-growth fungal forest.
Tentatively, I enter. Woody spindles reach 30 ft to expansive maroon gilled caps which block the sky. Antlike crabs, no bigger than my first, iridescent blue, march up the trunks. Fungal gills are…
